Precision tool technology

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Producing profiles to the highest perfection

In times of an abundance of difficult framework conditions, companies in the machining industry need innovative partners and technology suppliers more than ever to help them master the special challenges they face.

One example is Hommel+Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH: knurling, marking, smoothing, gear cutting and floating broaching - with standard tools and customer-specific solutions, the tool specialists from Aldingen ensure high-quality and profitable production around the globe, even in difficult times. At the Turning and Cutting Days Southwest (DST) from March 29 to 31 in Villingen-Schwenningen, the company will be presenting a cross-section of its capabilities in Hall A, Stand A.117.

The Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg region is one of the largest machining industry clusters in south-west Germany and, with its many progressive companies, is a driving force for turning and machining technology. "As an industry platform, the DST is exactly the right forum to present our tool technologies to the specialist audience," says Tobias Konz, Chief Sales Officer | Sales & Marketing at Hommel+Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH. "We are exhibiting here together with other top-class tool manufacturers, Schwartz - tools + more GmbH & Co. KG and Zecha Hartmetall-Werkzeugfabrikation GmbH. The joint stand can therefore be seen as a kind of 'competence center for machining'. Under the motto 'Short distances, more information, more benefits', trade visitors will be presented with a maximum of technology and expertise in many facets of sustainable, productive and economical machining, for example in knurling, marking and smoothing technology, turning and micro-machining."

Individual product solutions lead to top products

Constantly increasing quality requirements for surface finishing means extraordinary demands on knurling. Convincing profiles can only be achieved with first-class tools or even individual tool designs, so that the user can experience the difference in appearance and functionality compared to standard products. The knurling technology of the zeus and QUICK brands under the umbrella brand Hommel+Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH (HKP) is world-leading and, like the unique marking technology, is produced, optimized and developed to customer specifications at the company's site in Aldingen. Tobias Konz: "Premium quality in marking too: In this day and age of state-of-the-art production technologies with assemblies and system components, marking workpieces is absolutely essential. Immediate traceability, batch separation and tracking as well as complete manufacturing documentation are essential requirements. In all of these areas, we will be able to help trade visitors with our expertise and tool solutions during DST."

Extremely smooth surfaces with roughness depths down to < Rz 1 µm

In addition to innovative gear cutting and pendulum broaching technologies from Hommel+Keller, the new generation of zeus diamond smoothing tools will certainly also be in the spotlight at the DST. They can be used in many applications as a significantly more economical alternative to fine machining processes such as grinding, lapping, honing and polishing. The user-friendly diamond tools deliver surface finishes down to < Rz 1 µm and significantly strengthened workpiece edge layers - even where very tight tolerances are required in terms of surface roughness depth and shape accuracy.

Innovative pendulum broaching for high-precision internal profiles

Other trade fair highlights include the Hommel+Keller pendulum broaching tools for the production of high-precision internal profiles such as square, hexagonal, Torx and Torx Plus in components made of materials up to 35 HRC. Thanks to internal cooling for emulsion and oil, chip removal and process cooling are optimized, wear is reduced and the service life of the ram is increased. Thanks to the concentric design, the tools can be used on CNC lathes and milling machines as well as on conventional machines. This eliminates the need to retool the workpieces on special machines such as broaching or shaping machines or to outsource cost-intensive production processes such as wire erosion.
