Vacuum solutions for European XFEL

Pfeiffer Vacuum has produced customized vacuum pumps for the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL). The XFEL generates ultra-short laser light flashes in the X-ray range - 27,000 times per second and with a luminosity that is a billion times higher than that of the best conventional X-ray radiation sources.

The processes of the European XFEL require ultra-high vacuum or high vacuum.

The X-ray flashes are generated in underground tunnels and make it possible to recognize atomic details of viruses, film chemical reactions and investigate processes inside planets. The processes of the European XFEL require ultra-high vacuum (UHV) or high vacuum (HV). Maintaining a good vacuum level is extremely important because it allows the XFEL beam and the high-power lasers to be transmitted without any loss of quality and to interact with the matter under investigation at the experimental stations. This means that there is no interference from air molecules or hydrocarbons, which can generate interfering background signals at the detectors.

As part of a multi-year collaboration, the manufacturer has developed customized vacuum solutions. They range from vacuum pumps and leak detectors to vacuum components for many vacuum applications inside the European XFEL. All solutions were tailored exclusively to the special requirements of these applications. sw
