SPS 2025
Interview with Franco Polo from Wago on cyber security and virtualization
SPS 2025 is approaching - and with it the question of what course the automation industry will set for the coming years. We asked exhibiting companies for their views on this. Franco Polo, Vice President System Sales Germany at Wago, explains in an interview which technologies the company is currently driving forward, which trends are shaping the industry and which challenges will be particularly relevant in the coming years.
Industrial Production: Which technologies do you focus on?
Franco Polo: Cyber security and virtualization are our focus areas. We protect OT and IT systems through intelligent network segmentation and intrusion detection. At the same time, we are driving forward virtualization for control and simulation applications as well as edge computing. In this way, we create the basis for secure, flexible and future-proof automation solutions.
Which industry trend is currently the most relevant for your company?
Cyber security and IEC 62443 conformity are the drivers. Customers expect verifiable security concepts and products that meet international standards. For us, this means thinking of security not just as a feature, but as an integral part of every solution.
Where do you see the biggest challenges for your industry in the next two to three years?
The rapid implementation of IEC 62443-4-2 for new and existing products is essential. Equally challenging: scalable patch and device management for secure updates in complex installations. Only those who address these issues at an early stage can ensure long-term competitiveness.
In your opinion, what would have to change politically or socially for the industry to grow more strongly again?
We need a balance between strict safety requirements and freedom to innovate; this is the only way to keep the industry fit for the future. Over-regulation must not become an obstacle to innovation, but must be designed to be practical.
And on a personal note: What is the highlight of SPS 2025 for you?
Clearly: the premiere of our first IEC 62443-4-2 certified product - the CC100 controller. A milestone for our cyber security strategy. This sends a strong signal for security and future viability in automation.
Thank you very much for the interview.
