Producing green hydrogen on site as needed

Green hydrogen is a key element for industry, mobility, electricity and heat supply in order to achieve climate targets and implement the energy transition. Efficient electrolysers are required for the cost-effective, decentralized production of this climate-neutral gas. One such solution is Ecolyzer, a modular system for alkaline pressure electrolysis, for which Ecoclean has recently started series production.

The globally active company's robust, low-maintenance electrolysers are offered as scalable standalone solutions and turnkey systems in the power range from one to 20 megawatts. After initially building a test stand for testing and validating electrolysis stacks with a maximum output of 500 kilowatts and a diameter of up to 1,500 millimetres and an electrolysis demonstrator ready for series production, Ecoclean is now starting series production of the Ecolyzer systems.

No resource-critical raw materials in use

The compact electrolysers are technologically based on a system technology for alkaline pressure electrolysis developed and optimized by the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) over the last ten years. One of the advantages of this proven and robust technology is that it does not require resource-critical raw materials such as precious metals or rare earths. Designed as modular units, the electrolysers enable the cost-efficient construction of plants with a system output of one to 20 megawatts in the vicinity of the energy generator (solar, wind, water), which can be easily expanded at a later date. The modular principle not only ensures cost-effective production of the electrolysers, but also comparatively short delivery times of currently twelve months.

The robust and durable systems deliver high gas quality and a system pressure of up to 30 bar as standard. As a gas pressure of 30 bar and more is not required for every application, Ecoclean is currently in the process of adding pressureless alkaline electrolysis to its product range. This solution offers cost benefits, particularly for higher outputs. In addition to the electrolyser, the product portfolio also includes systems such as water treatment, gas purification and gas compression, if required.

Scalable solutions for efficient on-site hydrogen production

Production raw material, substitute for fossil fuels, fuel forCO2-neutral mobility, storage medium for regeneratively generated electricity or decentralized district solution for power generation and heat supply - thanks to their scalability, the robust and low-maintenance electrolysers can be adapted to the hydrogen requirements of different applications. This makes them an ideal solution for industrial and transportation companies as well as for energy suppliers and system providers of climate-neutral energy solutions. The Ecolyzers enable energy-intensive industrial sectors such as the steel and chemical industries to produce green hydrogen in the required quantity and quality economically on site. This achieves a high level of supply security and logistical independence at a competitive cost per kilogram of hydrogen.

Fast refueling and long ranges

In the field of mobility - whether on- or off-road, passenger or freight transport - hydrogen produced by means of alkaline electrolysis and green electricity enables cost-effective decarbonization without the exploitation of raw materials such as precious metals and rare earths. Regardless of whether the vehicle is powered by a fuel cell or combustion engine, rapid refuelling and long ranges are further advantages that speak in favour of the use of hydrogen and its decentralized production. This makes Ecolyzer solutions interesting for local authorities and transport companies that want to set up hydrogen filling stations, among others.

Use surplus electricity

Electricity production from the sun and wind is rarely congruent with consumption. Converting surplus electricity into easily storable hydrogen using electrolysis helps to stabilize the power supply. This is because it can be converted back into electricity using a fuel cell and fed into the grid during dark doldrums. The efficiency of this process is often unfairly criticized; without hydrogen production, the surplus green electricity could not be used at all.

Heat supply for residential areas

The electricity generated by photovoltaics supplies the consumers and the electrolyzer, which converts excess electricity into hydrogen. If the solar radiation is not sufficient, the supply is ensured by reconverting the hydrogen into electricity using a fuel cell. The resulting waste heat can be used for heating via a local heating network. It is also possible to replace a certain proportion of natural gas in gas heating systems with hydrogen. This allows the proportion of climate-neutral energy in buildings to be increased.

Due to the strong expansion of photovoltaics and wind power, the production of green hydrogen will become significantly more important. With the Ecolyzer for alkaline electrolysis, Ecoclean offers a sophisticated, globally available solution that combines reliability and performance with high cost efficiency.
