Filtering cooling lubricants

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Filter technology for precise grinding

To ensure optimum quality when grinding, it is crucial that the cooling lubricant is free of metal particles. Modern filter systems serve this purpose, not only guaranteeing 100% clean oil, but also helping to save energy.

In order to grind precision tools with high accuracy, tool manufacturers must be at the cutting edge of technology and optimally coordinate all parameters. The ultra-fine filtration of cooling lubricants plays an important role here. This is because clean coolants have a significant influence on the quality of the ground tools, and finely filtered grinding oils that remain in the system for a long time also contribute to cost savings in production.

Grinding oils are contaminated by metal abrasion, dirt and decomposition products and represent risk factors in the grinding process. If these were not comprehensively filtered, they would have to be replaced at short intervals. Whether conventional, synthetic or water-miscible - the lubricoolant sector is a sensitive, highly technical topic in metalworking. The choice of the right coolant lubricant depends on the respective process factors. Tool manufacturers can use cutting fluids tailored to their machining applications. Steffen Strobel, Technical Sales Manager of the filter manufacturer Vomat from Treuen, says: "In today's tool manufacturing, efficient lubricoolant filtration means more than just filtering a necessary auxiliary material. Anyone who uses innovative grinding oils in their grinding workflow cannot make any compromises, especially when it comes to ultra-fine filtration. Choosing the right filter system is therefore an important prerequisite for the quality and efficiency of the entire value chain."

Modern filtration technology

Thanks to their special design features, Vomat filters are also able to reliably filter the latest generations of cooling lubricants. The full-flow filtration ensures 100% separation of dirty and clean oil thanks to special high-performance precoat filters. The system thus permanently provides the grinding system with clean oil in NAS-7 quality (3 to 5 µm). The backwash cycles are controlled depending on the degree of contamination of the filter elements. "The system reacts to changing cutting volumes and adapts to the production process. This means that less energy is consumed. The service life of the filter elements is also increased and the cooling lubricant can remain in the system for longer," says Strobel.
