Ball screw drives play an important role in drive technology; their main area of application is machine tools, such as machining centers, on which workpiece or tool carriers are to be positioned.
Ball screw drives have advantages over conventional screw drives, whose sliding surfaces convert up to 90 percent of the power input into heat, but require feedback systems tailored to the requirements for effective use. The major challenge in the design of ball screw drives is the closed ball circuit. This purpose is fulfilled by the ball return system, which returns the balls to their starting point after passing through one or more threads. Steinmeyer manufactures ball screw drives with various internal and external deflections - including ultraspeed versions for use in highly dynamic feed axes of machine tools.
The end cover deflection is suitable for extremely steep or multi-start threads, the Z deflections for particularly large balls in heavy-duty ball screws. Internal deflections such as the single thread deflection or the deflection strip are particularly suitable for small to very small ball diameters and small pitches. The type and design of the ball recirculation system largely determine its suitability for high speeds. This is expressed by the so-called "DN value", which is a multiplication of the maximum number of revolutions per minute by the nominal diameter in millimetres. The DN values of the ball recirculation systems established on the market range from around 60,000 for simple tube recirculation systems to a good 160,000 for the "Ultraspeed" version of Steinmeyer's total recirculation system. pb
