Extended service life

NSK housing bearings save 5,000 euros

By switching to molded oil housing bearings, a beverage manufacturer was able to drastically reduce the premature failure of roller bearings on conveyor systems. The service life of the bearings has been extended as a result, and the user is saving more than 5,000 euros per year.

The beverage manufacturer suffered recurring breakdowns on four central conveying and sorting systems caused by damage to housing bearing units. Although the bearing units were relubricated every three weeks, they only had an average service life of five to six months. NSK was asked to find a solution and increase bearing life.

The analysis revealed that the failures were primarily caused by the frequent cleaning processes. During these processes, the cleaning medium - a mixture of water and chemicals - first destroyed the bearing seals and then washed the grease out of the bearings in a second step.

The NSK experts suggested fitting housing bearings with molded oil bearing inserts at the affected bearing points. The bearing insert here consists of a sealed single-row ball bearing with a spherical outer diameter, which is mounted in either a plummer block or a flanged bearing housing.

The Molded Oil bearing inserts are lubricated with an oil-impregnated material developed by NSK, which consists of lubricant and an oil-related polyolefin resin. This (solid) lubricant cannot be washed out by liquids or steam. At the same time, the ingress of contaminants into the bearing is reliably prevented. And since the carrier material only releases the lubricant gradually, sufficient lubrication is ensured over long periods of time.

In addition, the environment is not contaminated because the lubricant cannot escape and no refilling is required. As the bearing inserts are made of stainless steel, they are suitable for use in the beverage industry, where frequent contact with water is part of the ambient conditions.

One year after the installation of the Molded Oil bearing inserts, the beverage manufacturer has not yet experienced any failures at the bearing points of the sorting system. The cost of purchasing new bearings has therefore been eliminated, as has the cost of regular relubrication. This results in cost savings of 5,080 euros in the first year. as
