Steel milling grades

Andrea Gillhuber,

For further tool concepts

Sandvik Coromant is now also offering its GC4330 and GC4340 steel milling grades for three other tool concepts: the CoroMill 300 round insert milling cutter for face and profile machining, the CoroMill 245 face milling cutter for roughing and finishing, and the CoroMill QD milling cutter.

GC4330 is a medium-hardness grade for roughing and pre-finishing during face milling, while the robust GC4340 is the preferred grade for roughing during corner and slot milling. They are manufactured from carbide substrate. For the coating, the tool specialist relies on Inveio technology, the unidirectional crystal alignment in the aluminum oxide coating, which increases the wear resistance and service life of the indexable insert.

"We developed GC4330 and GC4340 to solve specific problems in the machining of steel components," explains Karl Emil Holmström, Global Product Application Manager Grades at Sandvik Coromant. "For example, some hard and abrasive steel alloys can promote wear along the flank face, especially at higher cutting speeds and longer engagement times. Furthermore, machining under unstable conditions due to unfavorable stresses or long overhangs increases the risk of chipping along the cutting edge. Another challenge is temperature fluctuations during machining, which can lead to cracking and sudden tool breakage, especially during wet machining."
