Micro milling cutter
Micro milling cutter: Accurate to a thousandth
Hoffmann has developed a micro milling cutter with a tolerance range of 0 to -0.005 millimetres. Applications include the production of miniature aluminum components, graphite and copper electrodes, semiconductors and dental ceramics. The micro milling cutters are available in three versions: corner-sharp milling cutters, torus milling cutters (in 5 variants) and radius copying milling cutters. According to the manufacturer, specially developed micro-geometries give the milling cutters high cutting edge stability. Optimized pointing angles and up to twenty percent larger chip spaces are said to ensure directional chip formation and significantly better chip removal.
The company relies on DLC and diamond coatings for the micro milling cutters. The DLC coatings are designed to produce smooth surfaces with thicknesses of 1 to 2 micrometers and a hardness of at least 6,000 HV. As a result, the cutting edges remain sharp and even long-chipping materials such as aluminum and copper alloys can be machined effortlessly, according to the company. The diamond coatings are extremely hard at around 10,000 HV. They have a coating thickness of 3 and 4 micrometres and are optimized for machining fibre composites and abrasive materials such as graphite. sw
