Tool systems between standard and customized

Horn traditionally presents new tools at the EMO. This year, these include MKD-tipped ball nose end mills, user-specific profiled inserts and a new holder system.

Milling instead of polishing is the name of the game with the range of tools for high-gloss milling from Hartmetall-Werkzeugfabrik Paul Horn GmbH. The ball nose end mills tipped with monocrystalline diamonds are suitable for machining non-ferrous materials in tool and mold making. The MKD-tipped tools are available in diameters of 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm and 16 mm. All variants have a single cutting edge and are designed with an internal coolant supply. The solid carbide tool shanks ensure vibration-free machining.

High-gloss milling is used, among other things, where the surface of the mold is reflected in the parts to be manufactured. According to the company, the process saves polishing work in tool and mold making and at the same time increases quality in terms of precision, contour accuracy, flatness and surface finish. High surface qualities are required, for example, for PET blow molds and chocolate molds as well as applications in medical technology.

New holder system

Horn has developed a new holder system for the Supermini type 105. Clamping no longer takes place via the lateral surface of the tool, but via a clamping wedge on the face. This increases the holding force of the cutting insert and thus the rigidity of the overall system. In addition, the new clamping system improves the repeat accuracy when changing inserts and the available installation space is better utilized thanks to the front-side operation. This is particularly advantageous when used on sliding headstock lathes, as the user can change the cutting insert without removing the tool holder.

The Supermini tool system was designed for machining bores with diameters from 0.2 to 8 mm. The cutting geometries and substrates can be adapted to the materials to be machined. With over 1,500 variants available, it is used for boring, grooving, chamfering, threading, grooving and other machining operations.

Drilling with profiled tools

Based on the tool system 117, Horn offers profiled inserts according to user requirements for use on turning and milling centers from 16 mm diameter. The system's patented precision insert seat ensures high concentricity and axial run-out accuracy as well as changeover accuracy in the µm range. An internal coolant supply through the round shank holder to both cutting edges ensures cooling of the contact zone and chip removal.

Horn offers the tools in mold widths (w) of 16 mm, 20 mm and 26 mm. The desired special shape is precision ground according to the application. The maximum mold depth is tmax = 17 mm, the maximum mold width is w = 26 mm. The tool coating is selected for each application and is available for the material groups P, M, K and N. The round shank holders are available as standard with shank diameters of 16 mm, 20 mm and 25 mm in designs A and E.
