Women in the IT industry 2018

Germany has the largest gender pay gap in Western Europe

In light of the ongoing public debate on gender equality, Honeypot has published the "Women in the IT industry 2018" index. The results highlight gender inequalities in general and in the IT industry.

The job board places a special focus on jobs for software developers and aims to strengthen its role as an industry expert by analyzing gender equality in the IT sector. Among other factors, the study analyzes the proportion of working women, the gender pay gap and job opportunities for women in the IT industry. By publishing the results, Honeypot aims to highlight the countries where opportunities within the IT sector are best for women, encouraging the industry as a whole to take further steps towards equality.

- In Germany, women in the IT sector earn 6.13% less than women in other professions. The gender pay gap in this sector is 25%.
- In Portugal, the USA and Latvia, women have the best opportunities in IT professions. The gender pay gap within the IT sector in these countries is 6-7% less than the general average pay gap.
- In the USA, annual salaries for women in the IT sector are the highest at €70,153, followed by Ireland (€49,052) and Switzerland (€47,814).
- Bulgaria has the highest percentage of women in the IT sector at 30%, followed by Australia (28%) and Romania (26%).

"The gender pay gap in the IT sector in Germany is 25%. This is the worst figure in Western Europe and is twice as high as in Belgium and France, where the pay gap between men and women is 11.8%. This suggests that the IT sector in Germany is lagging behind other Western countries in terms of equality," says Emma Tracey, Co-Founder of Honeypot. "While the German government is taking steps to have a positive impact on equality in business, such as the Pay Transparency Act which came into force in July 2017, it remains to be seen whether this will actually have an impact or simply lead to more bureaucracy," she says.
