Company anniversary

Melanie Steinbeck,

A century and a half of international mechanical and plant engineering

Amandus Kahl is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2026 under the motto "150 years of innovation - tradition with a future". The company, based in Reinbek near Hamburg, is now one of the leading international manufacturers of pellet presses, process technology and complete production systems. The solutions are used in particular in the animal feed, biomass, recycling, food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Innovation, quality and a long-term and sustainable orientation are the central guidelines for the company's development.

The origins of the company date back to 1876, when Amandus Kahl was founded in Hamburg under the name Wendte & Kahl. In the early years, the focus was on the manufacture of ovens and stoves. The takeover of an iron foundry in nearby Stade marked the beginning of the company's own production and thus the basis for its later specialization in mill and plant construction. For several decades, the company worked in parallel at two locations: While sales, design and development are based in Hamburg, production takes place in Stade and later also in Hamburg.

A major turning point in the company's history comes in 1965 with the move to Reinbek. For the first time, administration, engineering, design and production are brought together in one location. This structural reorganization forms the basis for today's plant, which is still located there today and continues to develop. Since then, the site has been expanded and modernized by investing in new production capacities and expanding the machinery, among other things. On an area of currently around five hectares, Reinbek is also the center of the KAHL Group today and will remain a central location for its further development in the future.

From individual units to complete production systems

Amandus Kahl achieved international renown in particular through the development of the flat die press. It is regarded as an example of the combination of experience and technical development. The pellet press, whose origins date back to the mid-1920s, is still the company's core product today and will remain so in the future. Over the decades, it has been continuously adapted to the requirements of different areas of application, for example with regard to throughput rates and specific material properties.

Today, the flat die press is used in a wide range of industrial processes - from animal feed and biomass processing to recycling applications and applications in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The portfolio is complemented by other machines and systems such as expanders, extruders, pan grinders, crushing roller mills, dryers, coolers and fluidized bed systems. At the same time, Amandus Kahl has continuously expanded its range of turnkey production lines.

Amandus Kahl is the leading sister company of the KAHL Group, which today comprises nine market-leading companies in their respective sectors with a total of around 900 employees. The merger has grown historically and began in 1990 with the acquisition of Neuhaus Neotec. Within the group, technological expertise is bundled from process engineering to complete plant construction.

The company's own technical center has a special function. This is where raw material properties are examined, recipes developed and process parameters for industrial applications defined. On this basis, customers receive reliable results for the design of new systems and products. On the occasion of the anniversary, Joachim Behrmann, Managing Director at Amandus Kahl, emphasizes: "Our anniversary is an occasion to look back proudly on the development of the past 150 years and at the same time to set the course for the future. Innovation arises where experience and curiosity come together. This interplay of tradition and future has shaped our company for generations and will remain a central component of our corporate culture in the future."
