Collision protection system

Play it safe

Spindle crashes are among the most common accidents when using machine tools. Collision protection systems for machine tools minimize damage and reduce downtime and repair costs in the event of a collision.

The MS³ motor spindle protection system from Jakob Antriebstechnik uses several sensors to detect collisions and reports them electronically to the machine control system. This can bring the feed axes of the machine tool to a standstill with measures such as braking and reversing the drives. However, the motor spindle protection system can also immediately interrupt the flow of force at the interface between the headstock and motor spindle mechanically and energy-autonomously by 3D deflection in the event of a collision-related overload, even before the electronic emergency stop.

This combination of mechanical protection system and active monitoring by electronic sensors makes the system superior to purely electronic collision protection systems and the shock-sensitive components of the motor spindle are effectively protected from the high force peaks of the collision, says the manufacturer. The resulting kinetic energy of the crash is absorbed by a built-in shock absorber. The system is energy self-sufficient, maintenance-free and can be adapted to all standard motor spindle geometries. as
