Atlas Copco inaugurates extension

New center for joining technology innovations

Atlas Copco opened its new customer world with innovation center in Bretten at the beginning of March. In future, joining technology solutions for the automotive industry and other sectors will be developed here.

Atlas Copco has opened its new customer world in Bretten at the site of the former SCA Schucker. The company has officially been operating as Atlas Copco IAS since March 1, 2018. Since mid-2016, the Group has invested around seven million euros in the 4,000 square meter conversion and extension of the existing buildings in order to be able to offer customers more joining technologies under one roof. "We have accommodated additional training and office space in the extensions, we will develop and test innovative joining technologies in the new innovation center, and we have created additional space for logistics and storage," says Olaf Leonhardt, Managing Director of Atlas Copco IAS.

One of the main drivers for the investment is the radical change that the automotive industry in particular, as the most important customer sector, has been undergoing for several years. "Our customers have to achieve very ambitious global environmental targets," Leonhardt continues. "We want to support them in this and stay one step ahead of the competition with our own innovations." Atlas Copco has been investing in new joining technologies for the Group for several years. In 2011, SCA added adhesive bonding and dispensing technology, followed by self-pierce riveting in 2014 with the acquisition of the British company Henrob. Both companies have been integrated into the "Industrial Assembly Solutions" division of the Industrial Technology Group Division.

"One of the major trends in the automotive industry is the reduction of vehicle weight," says Leonhardt. "Multi-material design is the rule today. In order to join the new material combinations, you need a comprehensive understanding of the process, expertise and ideally access to all - or as many as possible - joining technologies. In Bretten, we meet precisely these requirements."

In the innovation center, mainly automated assembly stations with the joining techniques of gluing and dispensing (including sealing and insulating), self-pierce riveting, screwing and flow drilling are installed and ready for demonstration. Further process steps, such as quality assurance with camera systems, are covered by partners. A second trend in the automotive industry and the basis for more sustainable mobility are new drive concepts, such as purely electric or hybrid drives, explains Leonhardt. These also require new joining solutions, as the intelligent assembly of a drive battery can improve its durability, performance and safety. as
