3D printing award ceremony
Protolabs wins Creative 3D Printing Award
Protolabs has won the Creative 3D Printing Award 2018 for the most creative use of 3D printing at the 3D Printing Industry Awards ceremony in London. The event shines a spotlight on successes, achievements and excellence in the rapidly evolving 3D printing industry.
The international award ceremony took place for the second time this year; more than 150 guests from more than 60 organizations were welcomed on site. It is clear that 3D printing is becoming increasingly important in all areas - and this award was further confirmation of this. Readers were able to vote for their personal favorites on the "3D Printing Industry" platform, from which the winners were then selected.
Protolabs was nominated with its Black Panther project for PepsiCo. The task was to produce a 3D-printed mask for a limited-edition fan set as part of an advertising campaign for the film "Black Panther". The design included complex geometries and particularly fine details. The end product needed to be as strong and durable as possible. Protolabs engineers evaluated a number of different 3D printing processes before deciding on Multi-Jet Fusion (MJF). MJF met the required quality standard and is also economical for small series - the company produced a total of 250 units.
Daniel Cohn, General Manager of Protolabs in Germany, accepted the award: "The PepsiCo project demonstrates our capabilities in many key areas. With the help of design recommendations and regular feedback to the customer, we were able to ensure feasibility. Together we then created a great product that met all the required design criteria and ultimately met PepsiCo's tight deadline. I am proud to be part of such a highly professional team that worked very hard on the project. We are particularly pleased to have won the Creative 3D Printing Award 2018 and it is thanks to everyone involved."
The award ceremony had an additional significance for the company: the organizers had announced a design competition for the trophies and, as sponsor of the event, commissioned Protolabs to produce the design by Sruthi Venkatesh, who won the competition. Protolabs produced 20 pieces from the Watershed material. For Protolabs, this meant that each winner took home one of the company's products: a magnificent and unique 3D work of art.
