Simulations with immediate results

ANSYS, a leading provider of CAE and multiphysics software with a focus on fluid dynamics (CFD), structural mechanics (FEM) and electromagnetics (EM) simulation, is revolutionizing product development with ANSYS Discovery Live.

Discovery Live enables millions of designers worldwide to visualize their designs more efficiently and quickly in real time. "Discovery Live enriches engineering departments by allowing engineers to ask 'what-if' questions at the very beginning of the design process and perform extensive testing. They can easily and quickly develop thousands of design options with instant results - greatly reducing design-dependent product costs," emphasizes Thomas Zanzinger, Managing Director of ANSYS in DACH. "Discovery Live's real-time simulation coupled with direct geometry modeling ensures interactivity in an intuitive design environment for rapid product innovation.

This allows engineers to review design changes immediately in the CAD system instead of spending weeks or months building, testing and analyzing prototypes."

The demand for smart, faster and more cost-effective products is constantly growing. At the same time, product development is becoming more complex. Trends such as the Internet of Things, smart connected products and additive manufacturing are merging the physical and digital worlds. This results in extraordinary product innovations as well as significantly rising costs and more complex designs across the entire product life cycle.

ANSYS released the beta version of Discovery Live back in September 2017 - and achieved the most successful customer preview in ANSYS history. "We've already had the opportunity to test ANSYS Discovery Live," says Craig Skinner, Chief Aerodynamicist at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing. "It's clear to us that this technology is ground-breaking because it enables interactive design with real-time simulation." The new version of the product that has now been released has extended functions for flow, structural and thermal mechanics.

ANSYS combines Discovery Live in a product family with ANSYS AIM and ANSYS SpaceClaim specifically for design engineers. The Discovery product family supports engineers at every stage of product development, from rapid concept validation at the beginning of the design process and 3D design creation through to full verification. It also enables designers to work more closely with simulation experts using ANSYS flagship products for detailed and in-depth simulations of complex relationships.

"Rossignol has been using ANSYS for 18 years in the design and development process of skis and bindings used in major competitions around the world. To meet the performance and safety requirements of the ski equipment and the fast product development cycles, a technology to fully accelerate the development process is essential - ANSYS meets these requirements," explains Nicolas Puget, Research & Innovation Manager at Rossignol. "We were able to test Discovery Live in the preview version. The benefits for our project teams - consisting of engineers, technicians, product developers and marketing product managers - were immediately noticeable. We will be using this exciting new real-time simulation tool for the design, development and manufacture of our equipment from now on."

Discovery Live is powered by NVIDIA Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and CUDA parallel computing, enabling super-computing to achieve results thousands of times faster than traditional methods. The real-time simulation environment is revolutionizing the way products are designed and developed. Using real-time simulation, Discovery Live enables cost and time savings by eliminating the need for costly prototyping during the development process. Designers have the flexibility to play with ideas to solve their design challenges - without fear of delays.

"Whether students, start-ups or Formula 1 teams - thousands of users have downloaded the beta version of Discovery Live. It was extremely exciting to see that users can use it to create almost any type of product with a wide range of design complexity," summarizes Thomas Zanzinger. "For us, this proves how important fast simulations are in the early concept development phase. With the Discovery product family, we are committed to the concept of 'Pervasive Engineering Simulation' - every designer can benefit from gaining valid insights into their designs."
