Refrigerant

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Climate tests without leakage test

Operators of climate test chambers must have them checked for leaks. This additional effort is no longer mandatory for systems with a new refrigerant. The refrigerant meets the requirements of the current EU regulation.

The newly developed WT69 refrigerant from Weiss Technik makes leak testing for climate test chambers superfluous. This is because its GWP value (CO2 equivalence) is only 1,357, which is so low that no leak test is mandatory for climate test chambers with less than 3.68 kg of refrigerant. The measurement results of systems designed for WT69 are similar to those of cabinets with older refrigerant. Another important advantage is that climate test chambers for environmental simulation with WT69 are future-proof. This is because the refrigerant used in the past is only permitted under exceptional regulations.

The reason for changing the refrigerant in climate test chambers is the EU Regulation 517/2014 on fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases), which has been in force since 2017. Among other things, this regulates the requirement for leak tests. This also affects the refrigerant R23 - which was previously the standard for the test range of -40 to -70 °C for climate test chambers.

The frequency of testing depends on the GWP value. R23 has a GWP of 14,800, which means that one kilogram of R23 is equivalent to 14.8 tons ofCO2. Systems filled with 0.34 kg or more of R23 must therefore be checked annually for leaks. For systems with the new refrigerant WT69, this requirement does not apply to companies and therefore also the effort and costs for the regular commissioning and documentation of the test.
