Innovation award for refrigerants

The WT69 refrigerant from Weiss Umwelttechnik was awarded 2nd place in the German Innovation Award 2020. The winners were announced on April 3, 2020.

Weiss Umwelttechnik is delighted to have won second place in the German Innovation Award 2020 for its WT69 refrigerant. Nine innovations made it onto the list of nominees. What makes WT69 so special is that it cools down to -70 °C and also meets EU requirements. According to the company, it releases 90 percent fewer greenhouse gases than alternatives.

"We left victory in the German Innovation Award 2020 to other innovations. However, we are delighted to be among the nominees alongside global market leaders such as Dürr, Varta, BMW and Covestro/Bayer," said Janko Förster, Head of Product Management.

Weiss Umwelttechnik needs very low temperatures for its climate chambers for environmental simulation. Until now, systems have achieved these with the help of environmentally harmful R-23 and energy-intensive liquid nitrogen. However, the EU has severely restricted the use of R-23 since 2014.

There was no alternative on the market, so Weiss Umwelttechnik took up the challenge itself. When the mechanical engineers were close to giving up, they found a cooperation partner and a suitable gas mixture in the TU Dresden. "We have already converted half of our portfolio to the new agent," reports Förster. ASHRAE gave the refrigerant the official designation R-469A last year. The refrigerant is also available independently of the climate chambers from Weiss Umwelttechnik.

WT69 is easy to compress and has a very low boiling point. The chemically stable, colorless and odorless gas mixture is non-toxic and non-flammable, so it is classified in safety group A1. Due to the low global warming potential of 1357, it meets the requirements of EU Regulation 517 / 2014 on refrigerants for new systems. There is no need for an exemption. Systems with WT69 only require leakage tests above a filling quantity of 3.6 kg.
