Lean processes and new business models

More than just hand trucks

Dr. Alexander Bünz has been the Managing Director of Expresso for almost four years. During this time, he has successfully implemented various modernization measures of strategic importance.

In the run-up to Logimat 2019, Bünz provides an insight into the company's new development processes and structures. The manufacturer of handling and transport systems wants to realize short innovation cycles and increasingly differentiate itself from the competition. Bünz has implemented fundamental strategic decisions in order to modernize Expresso, implement lean processes and further improve customer orientation. Instead of three, the company now operates with five business units, which are managed as profit centers by experienced managers.

The "Classic" division, which deals with hand trucks, has undergone the most intensive change. The "Dynamic" profit center, which represents the powered handling and transport systems, is being driven forward with modular standardization. New processes for efficient product development have been installed across all divisions.

Expresso scores with comprehensive special construction and engineering expertise, which - in addition to the business with series products and standard solutions - is to be further expanded. This will ensure that new ideas and creative partnerships are developed together with customers. The desire to regularly create innovations in the markets is also part of the company's DNA, says Bünz. "More than ever, we see this as the foundation for our success. Building on this, we have installed new structures and processes at various levels that promote innovative thinking and accelerate the implementation of new product ideas."

Expresso wants to further expand its existing network with market-leading medium-sized companies. "We are thinking about whether we can do something together with almost all of our competitors - instead of always trying to steal customers from each other," says the CEO. He also talks about the development of new business models, such as pay-per-use for loading lifts and trolleys or innovative maintenance services for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance for loading lifts. "We are applying both modern Industry 4.0 technologies and IoT principles in practice," says Bünz. pb
