Recent periods of drought show that water has also become a precious commodity in this country. The economy accounts for the largest share of water consumption in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, companies used around 15 billion cubic meters of water in 2019 - by far the largest proportion of this (85%) for cooling systems.

20,000 cubic meters of water saved annually

"This is exactly where we come in," explains Benjamin Flaig, Head of Energy Management at Alfred Ritter. "When making chocolate, the ingredients have to be heated up and then cooled down again and again. With the new cooling system, we save around 20,000 cubic meters of water every year."

By comparison, the average water consumption per person in Germany is around 47 cubic meters per year, according to the German Association of Energy and Water Industries. Ritter not only saves water with the new system, but also energy, as the electricity requirement is only around 25 percent of the previous system. "Every step that brings us closer to our goal of reducing emissions is important," emphasizes Flaig. "The energy transition also means using energy as efficiently and sparingly as possible."
