Igus puts high-speed plant into operation

Igus operates the largest test laboratory in the industry on more than 3,800 square meters. Ten billion cycles are run each year for energy chains and cables alone. Igus has now put a new automated test facility for long distances into operation on the outdoor site in Cologne Porz-Lind.

Transporting data, energy and media safely over long distances is a challenge for operators of sewage treatment plants, waste incineration plants, cranes, power plants and mines. This is because fast speeds and high filling weights often pose problems for cable carriers such as motorized cable reels, conductor rails or festoonings. An alternative are energy chain systems from Igus, which are tested in our own test laboratory. The company has now put a new automated test facility into operation to give customers the certainty that their cable carrier system will work over long distances.

New test stand for long distances
On the outdoor area at the site in the south of Cologne, energy chains and cables are tested at a travel speed of up to eight meters per second over a distance of currently 200 meters, which corresponds to a travel distance of 400 meters. Additional units will enable travel distances of up to 1,000 meters to be simulated in future.

The fully automatic system takes into account various areas of application with regard to acceleration and speed. In addition to the mechanical load caused by the movement of the transfer vehicle, environmental influences act unhindered on the tested energy chains and cables.

At 3,800 square meters, the test stand is part of the largest test laboratory in the industry. A total of 180 test stations are used to carry out over ten billion test cycles per year with e-chains and Chainflex cables. 4,100 energy chain system tests are completed annually on 180 systems such as the climate chamber or on robots. as
