Polymer bearings in debarking machines
Igus bearings improve wine production
After the grape harvest, de-stemming machines ensure that the grapes are carefully separated from the stems. Lubricant-free and maintenance-free Iglidur-J plain bearings are used here to reliably support the internal drum.
In Baden, the grape harvest begins at the beginning of August this year. Experts are expecting a top vintage, particularly in the southern regions of Germany. After the harvest, careful processing is a decisive criterion for the quality of the wine, and even the ancient Egyptians knew how to appreciate wine. At that time, the grapes were harvested from the vines by hand and then crushed in a large barrel. To avoid bitter tannins in the wine, the stems and stalks were removed during harvesting. The principle of wine production has changed little to this day. However, the machines used have made great progress.
During the harvest, the grapes are picked together with the stems and stalks using a picking machine and then transported to a destemmer. A drum-like sieve is used to separate the fruit from the bitter wood components in a rotating movement. The environment of dirt, wood and must is a real challenge for the storage locations. Iglidur-J bearings are therefore used in Siprem International's de-stemming machines.
In California alone, 130,000 liters are channeled through Siprem's systems in just two months. The Iglidur-J bearings enable reliable permanent rotation of the drum thanks to their lubricant-free and chemical resistance as well as their low moisture absorption. The previously installed metallic bearings had to be repeatedly maintained and replaced in this difficult environment due to the wood residue and were ultimately replaced by the plastic plain bearings from Igus. With the help of the Iglidur bearings, the service life was increased simply and cost-effectively and machine downtimes were reduced. as
