85 years of precision technology from the Black Forest
Anniversary at Kammerer Gewindetechnik
Kammerer Gewindetechnik, manufacturer of screw drives in Hornberg in the Black Forest, is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year. The family business was founded in 1938 and is now managed by the third generation with 160 employees.
Franz and Anna Kammerer laid the foundation stone for the Black Forest company when they set up a manufacturing company in modest premises in 1938 to produce parts for the watchmaking industry. In 1953, the couple began producing turned parts, and in the following years they expanded their range to include the manufacture of threaded spindles. After the death of the company founder, his sons Klaus and Wolfgang supported their mother in continuing the business. As early as 1971, Kammerer exhibited at the EMO machine tool trade fair for the first time. In order to enable more economical production in a convenient location, the company acquired the former district court in Triberg in 1978 and converted it. The growing company now also began to train its own skilled workers. In 1986, the previous limited partnership finally became a limited company, with the brothers Klaus and Wolfgang Kammerer as managing directors. In 1992, the third generation of the family joined the company, represented by the sons of the two managing directors, Achim and Peter, who have been managing the company together ever since.
The grandfather was inventive
"Despite being founded as a watchmaking business, our inventive grandfather broke new ground with the production of threaded spindles," says Peter Kammerer, a mechanical engineer who is responsible for the technical side and sales. "Due to his untimely death, our grandmother took over the management of the company together with our fathers in the mid-1960s. Kammerer became one of Germany's leading specialist manufacturers of thread technology, not only thanks to women in management positions, but also thanks to innovative developments in the field of thread hard peeling."
Committed family business
"In order to continue solving our customers' problems with Black Forest ingenuity, we are keeping our investments high," says Achim Kammerer, who is responsible for the commercial aspects of the company as a business economist. "Between 1992 and 2022, we increased our turnover almost sixfold from five to 28.5 million euros. This success was made possible by our employees and their extraordinary commitment. With their high level of motivation and strong identification with the company, they are happy to contribute their ideas. We really appreciate that."
Remarkable path of growth
Kammerer has invested continuously in recent years: in order to meet the growing requirements, a new production facility was built in 2002 in the Hornberg-Niederwasser industrial estate on an area of 5,500 square meters. Due to the increased space requirements, this had to be expanded to 7,000 square meters in 2006. In the following years, Kammerer launched a new project together with an automotive supplier, which was so successful that it required a further expansion of production. The new Plant 2 was put into operation in 2014. It covers an area of 2,000 square meters, including around 1,500 square meters of production space. Due to the relocation of the entire automotive production to the new plant and the investment in additional machines, a line-optimized hall layout was necessary, which Kammerer developed together with Offenburg University of Applied Sciences. This resulted in the repositioning of almost all production machines in 2017. "Despite all the adversities of recent years, we have not stopped investing, but have invested in new machines and a photovoltaic system. An extension is also planned for 2024," says Achim Kammerer.
Operation prepared for the future
"As a family business, our primary goal is to preserve the company so that we can pass it on to the next generation," says Achim Kammerer about the future prospects. His cousin Peter adds: "The global events of recent years have been and continue to be very stressful for all of us. We are doing everything we can to ensure that we can continue to offer our employees a secure job in the future. With our expertise, we want to continue to offer our customers around the world tailor-made solutions from the Black Forest in the future."
Environmental protection and resource conservation
As far as sustainability is concerned, the careful use of natural resources has been an integral part of the company's policy for years. "We have had our own photovoltaic system on the roof since 2006, which we expanded in 2022 and can now cover 25 percent of our electricity requirements with our own electricity. We have been EMAS-certified since 2006, and our environmental team is working on ways to continue using resources carefully and reduce our consumption to the bare minimum," says Peter Kammerer. "When it comes to environmental protection, our motto is: be better today than yesterday, and better tomorrow than today!"
