AI and AR are gaining in importance

Augmented reality technology has the potential to redesign manufacturing processes and thus increase efficiency. As the technology is also becoming increasingly accessible, the area of application will also expand in 2023. Teamviewer also identifies easily accessible AI applications that can be used to optimize processes and create valuable forecasts and that support AR technology as being particularly effective in the corporate environment.

In recent decades, the focus has been on the digitalization of work processes in traditional office jobs. However, areas such as manufacturing, warehousing and logistics are now following suit. Necessarily so, as around 80% of all employees worldwide work in industrial environments, there is enormous potential to make industrial value chains more efficient.

Teamviewer, a provider of solutions for remote connectivity and the digitalization of work processes, says it wants to proactively help shape the digital transformation of companies. To this end, the company uses technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) - technologies that will become increasingly important in the industrial environment this year.

AR in use for onboarding

In contrast to virtual reality (VR), which creates an immersive virtual environment, AR augments a real situation. AR technology has been in use in some areas for some time. According to Gartner, it has now left the "hype cycle" behind it. This means that it has developed from a "technology under observation" to a "technology in use".

The use of technology is already widespread in employee training. AR makes long text documents superfluous in training and maintenance. As production processes or tasks can be explained very well using videos, 3D animations or drawings, among other things, employees are prepared for working on the machine in a realistic way. A recently published survey by Teamviewer clearly demonstrates the advantages over traditional training. According to the survey, companies that use AR for training purposes are around 2.5 times more likely to achieve their onboarding goals. The greatest benefits are seen in tracking, error reduction, work experience and the ability of employees to remember. Teamviewer therefore expects to see increased use of AR in onboarding, training and development in 2023.

AR in production and quality control

While meetings, communication and documentation in the office have been digitized for years, employees in production or quality control still work with printed manuals and documents. But this is already changing. GlobalFoundries, the largest semiconductor factory in Europe, for example, relies on digital warehouse processes. The implemented software guides the warehouse workers through the entire picking process with clear step-by-step instructions. By displaying the information on the data glasses and thanks to integrated voice control, the workers have both hands free for their actual tasks. The results speak for themselves: by implementing the Teamviewer AR solution Frontline, the company has achieved up to 25% faster execution of warehouse processes. In addition, workplace ergonomics have been improved, the error rate during order picking has been minimized to almost zero and paper waste has been reduced by around 100,000 sheets per year.

Teamviewer is therefore certain that more and more companies will be using this technology in 2023 to increase efficiency and productivity in warehousing, quality assurance and production and to improve occupational safety.

Artificial intelligence exploits potential

The digital transformation of manufacturing, logistics and business processes has opened up a veritable gold mine of data. However, it is impossible for humans to sift through and make sense of all this new information. Teamviewer therefore expects that manufacturers will increasingly use AI technologies in 2023, especially for the use of data and process analysis.

Teamviewer also identifies the combination of AI and wearable technology such as smart glasses as a future-proof trend. This new form of technological support, known as augmented intelligence (AI) - in reference to augmented reality and artificial intelligence - makes it possible to make even better use of employees' potential. This technology is already being used in the food industry, for example, where it helps to check the quality of goods through image recognition. The software running on the smart glasses compares the actual and target condition of the manufactured products.

AI increases employee satisfaction

As a result, employees deliver more accurate and therefore better results for their customers. In addition, AI also supports compliance with health and safety standards. For example, the software on the smart glasses can use a camera to check whether employees are wearing the prescribed hygiene gloves, which leads to increased food and workplace safety. Smart Glasses help to improve employee performance on the shop floor as well as ergonomics, capacity, efficiency and accuracy. This puts the company in a better position to respond to and meet the changing demands of the supply chain.

However, the use of AI in logistics and production not only increases the efficiency of the company, but also employee satisfaction - an important factor for employee retention in an industry that is finding it increasingly difficult to attract and retain qualified employees. Teamviewer therefore expects companies in this and other sectors to invest in the technical requirements such as smart glasses and the corresponding software for the use of augmented reality in 2023.
