Siemens Industrial Edge creates an ecosystem that enables the flexible provision and use of apps. For example, suitable apps can be used to analyze data locally on the machine and send relevant data to the superimposed Industrial Edge Management System for global analyses.

Industrial companies should be able to use production data more efficiently and react more flexibly to changing conditions with the resulting industrial edge ecosystem. Ralf-Michael Franke, CEO of the Factory Automation Business Unit, said: "Future technologies such as edge computing open up new possibilities in automation. With Siemens Industrial Edge, we are creating an open edge ecosystem from which companies of all sizes can benefit."

Siemens is relying on the standard container technology "Docker": this will make it just as easy to deploy apps in the management system as it is to reload functionalities and updates for edge devices in the factory from a central location.

Siemens intends to acquire Pixeom's technology and use it in the Factory Automation Business Unit, which is part of Siemens Digital Industries. Pixeom, with locations in San José, California and Udaipur, India, employs 81 people worldwide. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2019. Both companies agreed not to disclose financial details of the transaction. as
