Baumüller at the SPS

Intelligent automation

Baumüller is presenting numerous new products at the SPS: Motor concepts, intelligent drive functions and control platforms can be seen at various stations. In the Industry 4.0 area, the connectivity and interoperability of components via OPC UA as well as cloud connectivity will be presented.

Components with IoT connectivity
Baumüller is expanding its components with additional IoT functionalities. This makes it easy to network and control machines and machine modules through to individual automation components. With the new IoT functions, data can be collected directly at the machine, pre-processed and output to other end devices or the cloud. This enables complex data analyses to enable Industry 4.0 applications such as predictive maintenance. At the same time, new business models such as "x per use" can be realized.

Individual parameterizations for the analysis of data up to the creation of own dashboards can be made directly on the component. The available MQTT module allows data to be read into various clouds, regardless of the respective cloud provider. An OPC UA module is also included to ensure interoperability at machine level.

New generation of b maXX 5300 baying technology
With the new edition of the b maXX 5300, Baumüller is revamping its baying technology. Thanks to numerous hardware and software options, customers and application requirements can be served more granularly in future. For example, the number of safe I/Os can be adapted to the respective requirements of the application. In addition, new safety functions will be integrated into the b maXX 5300, such as the transmission of the safe position via FSoE to a higher-level safety controller. This function can be used to implement safe room monitoring and the safe collaboration of multiple axes, for example in robotics applications.

Intelligence in the drive
The intelligent inverters of the b maXX 5000 family with integrated softdrivePLC enable data analysis directly in the drive. This means that logical links can not only be parameterized, but also programmed. For example, if the control loops oscillate due to resonance frequencies, a more dynamic setting can be used to minimize this oscillation and increase productivity. Vibrations in the mechanical system can also be filtered out with the intelligent b maXX inverters.

Numerous controller functions are integrated into the b maXX 5000 series to make the system more efficient and intelligent. Functionalities such as gearbox protection, adaptation of controller parameters, error reactions and monitoring of thermal pump utilization via a temperature model ensure lower service costs, shorter downtimes and lower system costs.

New servo pump software version
Adaptive pressure pre-control is a significant improvement to the software modules of the control function in the new servo pump software version V2+. The intelligent control algorithm adapts adaptively to different pressure rise speeds: The parameterization only needs to be set once and is then automatically adjusted. The software enables an overshoot-free pressure jump in minimum time and thus ensures an optimized process sequence. As the relevant parameters are automatically readjusted during the production process with a control cycle of 125 microseconds, the adaptive control system eliminates or greatly reduces pressure overshoots. The required pressure value is set automatically with a controlled transition.

The Baumüller experts have added various protective functions to the V2+ version of the servo pump to ensure that the wear of heavily loaded parts of the servo pump does not affect the quality of the end products and that the machine components are also subjected to less stress. For example, the pump utilization is monitored as standard in high-load pressure maintenance mode. If the temperature model indicates a thermal overload, the bypass valves open automatically to remove the overheated oil. The servo pump is cooled until it has returned to normal temperature. A further point of monitoring concerns the leakage curve. In the new version, this can also be recorded and compared with reference data. This makes diagnosis easier and wear or even the need to replace valves and seals can be detected more quickly.

Engineering 4.0
Virtual configuration and testing of automation systems: The newly developed Prosimulation software enables customers to enter the world of simulation straight away. The new tool simplifies the virtual design, optimization and commissioning of machines and systems. Depending on their level of experience, customers can either quickly create their own simulations and use cases thanks to the basic library or import existing software models using open interfaces.

According to the company, the advantages of prosimulation include time and cost savings in the development and commissioning of new machines and systems, as well as the optimization of existing machines. In addition, simulation expertise and therefore competence in the areas of Industry 4.0 and digital twin can be built up within the company. Prosimulation expands the functional scope of the Prodrive software, which enables quick and easy commissioning, parameterization and operation of the b maXX inverter family. Prosimulation enables virtual parameterization for optimizing machine behaviour.

Water-cooled servomotors
Baumüller is also expanding its servomotor portfolio to include the water-cooled model sizes 45 and 56. With space-saving installation and high power density at the same time, the advantages of water cooling come into their own with the small sizes. This means that motors with a very compact installation space can be used for high rated outputs. For the machine manufacturer, this means optimum mechanical properties, lower costs and better economy.

In addition to the cost savings, the small water-cooled sizes also offer further advantages in terms of installation space: The housing family is identical to an uncooled version in terms of external dimensions - but offers significantly more power. It therefore combines the advantage of maximum cooling with minimum motor dimensions. A further advantage of heat dissipation using water as a cooling medium is that the motors can be installed next to each other without heating each other up, even in tight spaces. Baumüller completes its series with water cooling for servo motors in sizes 45 and 56, making it the only manufacturer to also offer servo motors in smaller sizes with all types of cooling.

Lifecycle Management
As a group of companies, Baumüller covers services for machine and plant construction as well as for machine operators in addition to the development and manufacture of automation components.
