Cable drum ensures inventory management
The Smart Cable Drum from Lapp is designed to help make the storage of cables more efficient. The intelligent cable drum was developed in cooperation with Schildknecht, the wireless specialist for industrial applications.
"We want to help our customers make Industry 4.0 a reality in their company. The intelligent cable drum helps with the digitalization of inventory management. Stock levels can be precisely aligned with actual demand. This saves costs and storage capacity," explains Ralf Moebus, Product Manager for Industrial Data Communication at Lapp.
Equipped with a sensor and electronics with radio transmission, the intelligent cable reel is able to determine the current cable inventory and transmit it to a data portal in a cloud via the company network or via global 2G-4G mobile radio technology.
"The Smart Cable Drum combines user benefits and innovative technology in an IIoT business model of the future," explains Elena Eberhardt, Business Development Manager at Schildknecht, and continues "Robust and cost-effective sensors with Bluetooth 5 or mobile technology can replace normal cable drums with intelligent ones. Above all, the eSIM card with worldwide availability makes international use easy to implement. Together with the right cloud solution, the system is quickly scalable for different applications, as standard interfaces such as Restful API are available."
This results in several advantages for the customer: The Smart Cable Drum helps to automate inventory management in the warehouse. The information from the intelligent cable drum can be transmitted directly to Lapp or alternatively via the company's internal network. This allows inventories to be reduced by making information on cable stocks and the current location of the cable reel available at any time via a cloud. Another application benefit is the integrated theft protection provided by an optional built-in GPS module, which provides information on the current location of the Smart Cable Drum. This allows cable theft to be detected and prevented at an early stage by sending a warning in the event of unusual consumption activity.
New business models are also conceivable: Lapp could make the cable drums available to its customers on a pay-per-use basis and charge for consumption according to the values determined by the Smart Cable Drum technology, while at the same time ensuring timely replenishment. as
