Post-processing of additive manufacturing
Tools for post-processing
At Formnext in Frankfurt am Main, the leading trade fair for additive manufacturing, Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme will be presenting its range of products and services for optimizing machining post-processing in additive manufacturing.
The manufacturer will be providing information on the potential offered by material and machine-specific tools in the post-processing of 3D-printed structures. The extensive portfolio of tools for deburring and finishing is the starting point for customer-specific solutions with which the Hufschmied experts can guarantee even longer tool life with shorter process times, according to the company.
"A large proportion of the workpieces produced using additive processes have to be reworked. For example, the removal of support structures or the finishing of surfaces that are too rough are almost unavoidable steps on the way to the product. The use of material and machine-specific tools can significantly reduce process times and costs here. As the materials used in additive manufacturing - from plastics and aluminum to titanium and hard steels - can be machined very differently, we recommend choosing the tools carefully," explains Ralph Hufschmied, Managing Director of Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme. "Cutting threads, bringing sintered workpieces to size, compensating for the high roughness of SLM-generated workpieces or distortion from downstream heat treatments - the post-processing tasks in additive manufacturing are diverse."
Sufficient surface quality in additive manufacturing processes is often extremely time-consuming. Surface quality can usually be achieved faster, more reliably and more cost-effectively with finishing in post-processing. Efficient post-processing is therefore suitable for significantly reducing overall process times - especially with hybrid machines. With tools that enable gentle material removal through to micro-cutting thanks to low cutting forces, burr-free cutting edges and low vibrations, the tool manufacturer achieves excellent results even with transparent plastics, composite materials and multi-layer structures made of different materials. Material-specific tools are also advisable in post-processing because materials from additive processes have different microstructures.
