Double-sided indexable insert
Cuts forged steel parts and stainless steel material
MU5 is the name of the new double-sided indexable insert for turning operations from Walter. It can be used for forged steel parts in automotive series production, such as powertrain or transmission components, as well as for components made from stainless steel.
With forged parts, the MU5 geometry minimizes the occurrence of crater wear - and therefore enables fully automated series production with process reliability. Walter 's MU5 is interesting for users with varying materials and smaller quantities due to its universal applicability for steel and stainless materials. The combination of improved chip breaking and longer tool life should be equally advantageous for both target groups.
The positive macro geometry is decisive for the properties of the MU5 inserts: open chip groove (long tool life and soft cutting behavior), V-shaped chip breaker (improved chip breaking), curved cutting edge (high surface quality). In copy turning, the MU5 geometry improves chip breaking not only in longitudinal and face turning, but also in bevels and radii, which are otherwise critical. During numerous field tests, the MU5 has also proven that it significantly reduces tool costs, especially in combination with the wear-resistant Tigertec Silver grades. The machining parameters of the insert are f: 0.15-0.6 mm; ap: 0.5-4 mm, which applies to 60 percent of all applications. The new MU5 insert is available in all standard basic shapes in order to offer customers the optimum solution in each case.
