Consulting package: Converting to water jet

The waterjet specialist STM offers companies that want to switch to waterjet cutting a free business consultation.

Small and medium-sized companies have a decisive advantage in the current economic situation: they can react faster than large corporations. This is especially true for those that are local and not dependent on suppliers and have universal processing expertise and repertoire in their operations. This is precisely why waterjet users are now ahead of the game. These companies are benefiting from the emergency situation, as they can compensate for delivery failures from overseas across all sectors and can increasingly prove themselves in the just-in-time production of large batches. Reason enough for the manufacturer STM to turn the crisis into a win-win situation and make it easier for companies to quickly switch to waterjet across the board. To this end, STM is offering companies free management consulting, which includes business plans, needs analyses, cost-benefit calculations and digitalization issues as well as process optimization in production. To this end, an experienced STM application engineer familiarizes himself with the individual company situation, makes suggestions and presents concrete waterjet solutions, which are documented with free test cuts and can be mastered through training. The coaching package also includes the procurement of used systems and a separate financing model, which will soon be ready for the market. All of this will be implemented remotely during quarantine periods with the help of modern conference technology. The campaign will initially run until 30.08.2020.

Over the last 30 years, STM has developed its waterjet system into a modular system that meets the "Big 5" requirements of future-proof production: Flexibility, cost-effectiveness, a high degree of automation, resource and energy efficiency and sustainability:

1. flexibility

Waterjet cutting is versatile. The cold cutting process is suitable for steel, aluminum, non-ferrous metal, glass, stone, plastic and composite materials, for example. Various materials in thicknesses from 0.1 to 300 mm can be cut quickly and to a high quality without the need for retooling. Pure water and abrasive cutting are possible in parallel - regardless of whether 2D, 3D, tube or robot cutting is required. And no matter whether prototype, small series or large quantities. With waterjet, for example, the series production of the universally required corona spit protection in checkout areas is just as possible as the production of face mask blanks.

2. economic efficiency

This cold cutting process guarantees cost-effective production with maximum precision, narrow cutting widths and the best cutting edge quality, regardless of whether it is for one-off or series production. Based on conventional CAD data, the technology enables the material and time-saving nesting of several work steps. Even very complex shapes can be produced with precision and clean cutting edges without deforming the material or surfaces, and drawings can be imported quickly and cutting parameters defined using a standard PC and STM's intelligent SmartCut software. The system calculates the cutting time and costs for each job so that production in the ideal cutting area can be monitored at all times. Faults can easily be rectified in-house or by remote maintenance. The usual reworking due to thermal deformation or burrs is completely eliminated. Maintenance requirements are also low and problems can usually be solved by remote maintenance. Another important aspect is the high wear resistance of the systems: thanks to the fact that STM only uses series components that are available over the long term, the systems are said to have a practically unlimited service life and can also be upgraded as required. Good logistics with short transport routes and extremely customer-oriented support guarantee smooth operation.

3. digitization

STM waterjet cutting systems are characterized by a high degree of automation and ease of operation. This means that cutting jobs can be processed virtually around the clock. STM systems are also M2M-capable and enable data exchange via all currently possible interfaces. On the one hand, this is ensured by the SmartCut software, which enables complex data exchange with work preparation, CRM and process control systems. On the other hand, the systems can be connected to standardized interfaces such as ProfiNET, ProfiBUS, UDP protocol or OPC server in order to network them with other cutting machines, pick-and-place machines or robots.

STM's application engineers are also prepared to support customers in the digitalization of production and to explore all possibilities in terms of data exchange and intelligent data processing on an interdisciplinary basis.

4. energy and resource efficiency

As a cold cutting process, waterjet cutting is energy-efficient per se. At STM, this advantage is also supported by the design. STM waterjet cutting systems are equipped as standard with energy-saving drives and guides in lightweight design, energy-saving LED lighting and a highly efficient power supply. At the heart of the waterjet cutting systems, the high-pressure pump, the ideal ratio of kW connected load to pressure and liters per minute also ensures minimal energy consumption.

But even beyond the energy aspect, waterjet cutting "powered by STM" helps to save resources. It requires minimal personnel and tool costs. Material consumption is minimized by technical refinements such as infinitely variable abrasive dosing and the efficient nesting of cutting jobs.

5. sustainability

Waterjet cutting is ecologically attractive due to the fact that neither gases nor dust are produced during operation. The process water and seals can also be easily recycled, e.g. with the worldwide unique fully automatic "OneClean" recycling system for water and abrasive. All residual materials can be professionally separated and disposed of. The systems also have a long service life, and individual components from old systems can still be used for new acquisitions, as the STM modular system is almost fully compatible.
