Industry 4.0 applications in the metal and steel trade

Companies are responding to economic developments by strengthening digital processes. According to the Fraunhofer IPA study, many small and medium-sized companies are falling behind. The current study shows future requirements, approaches to digitalization and Industry 4.0 applications in the metal and steel trade.

Industry 4.0 applications and digital products can support the cutting and processing of semi-finished products by facilitating production steps such as drilling, chamfering or face milling. The companies surveyed focus on data evaluation, transparency and real-time capability. According to the interviewees, the integration of existing machines and the interface problem pose challenges during implementation.

Although examples of the implementation of existing Industry 4.0 application products show great potential, these products are rarely used. Data is largely recorded in writing or locally in the machine control system. Here, digital applications could help to facilitate access to process data for order and production planning.

According to the Fraunhofer IPA study, 80 percent of participants stated that they had no experience with Industry 4.0 applications. 60 percent of respondents want to use digital applications in the future and are willing to invest. There is a high potential for automation among the respondents, with 95 percent of companies reporting a degree of automation of less than 50 percent.

Digitized products are accepted by the companies, with the management level being more open to the topic than the workers at the machines. According to the study, acceptance also depends on the age of the employees.
