Couplings with flange mounting
A strong connection
The performance requirements of precision machines demand that every single component is considered and evaluated. Not least the flexible couplings with which the drive components are connected.
When optimizing for highly dynamic movements and loads, while maintaining high positioning accuracy and damping, machine designers are increasingly moving away from shaft connections and instead opting for compact flange mounting to reduce size, weight and inertia while increasing system rigidity.
This is a key area where R+W precision couplings can be found. Metal bellows and elastomer couplings are both manufactured with either standard or customized flange connections.
Metal bellows couplings are known for their very high torsional rigidity. They are therefore used in the most dynamic applications. In contrast, elastomer couplings result in a certain degree of shock and vibration damping, but are absolutely backlash-free.
The flexible flange couplings, which facilitate attachment directly to the rotating components without additional adapters, give designers a greater degree of freedom in the design and arrangement of the machines.
Flange connections are friction-locked connections (bolts in a bolt circle) that can be installed quickly and easily and can generate sufficient pressure if designed and installed correctly. The use of a centering shoulder allows for more precise alignment compared to the use of clamping screws.
Like all R+W couplings, flange-mounted versions are manufactured with high precision and offer low weight, low inertia and high rigidity compared to other connection types.
