Engine control for automotive applications

With the TLE988x and TLE989x product families, Infineon Technologies is expanding its extensive portfolio of MOTIX MCU embedded power ICs. Thanks to the integration of gate driver, microcontroller, communication interface and power supply on one chip, the system-on-chip solutions are very space-saving. The new TLE988x and TLE989x families offer higher performance and now feature CAN-FD as a communication interface. The ICs are qualified according to AEC Q-100 and are therefore ideal for controlling brushed and brushless DC motors in the automotive sector in bodywork, comfort and thermal management applications.

"The new MOTIX MCU embedded power IC families meet our customers' requirements for the smallest integrated intelligent motor control solutions with fast and very robust on-chip CAN FD transceivers for host communication," said Andreas Doll, Senior Vice President and General Manager Smart Power at Infineon. "The new product families also offer around 60 percent more computing power than the established TLE987x product family and have functional safety and cybersecurity features that are becoming increasingly important for oil pumps in electric vehicle thermal management systems."

The new components include a B4 or B6 bridge N-channel MOSFET driver, an Arm® Cortex® M3 microcontroller and a CAN FD controller and transceiver with a communication speed of up to 2 Mbps. Customers benefit not only from fast and reliable communication, but also from maximum computing power thanks to the high system frequency of 60 MHz and the dual flash memory with simultaneous read and write function. The relevant functions of the new products have been developed in accordance with ISO 26262 (ASIL B), and some variants have integrated cybersecurity functions. All these functions are offered in a 7 x 7 mm² TQFP housing with a market-leading small footprint.

The MOTIX MCU TLE988x 2-phase bridge driver family and the MOTIX MCU TLE989x 3-phase bridge driver family integrate several components. They offer flash sizes of up to 256 kB and support temperature ranges (T j max) of up to 175°C. In addition, the ICs feature Infineon's patented Adaptive MOSFET Control algorithm. This compensates for fluctuations in the MOSFET parameters in the system by automatically adjusting the gate current to achieve the desired switching behavior. This allows the system to be optimized in terms of EME (electromagnetic emissions, slow slew rates) and at the same time in terms of power dissipation (short dead times). In addition, the adaptive MOSFET control enables a flexible supply chain, as the same switching behavior is maintained with different MOSFET production batches or differences between MOSFET suppliers.

To accelerate the evaluation and design-in process, the MOTIX MCU embedded power ICs are complemented by a comprehensive ecosystem consisting of software, evaluation boards and kits as well as various tools for simulation, configuration and visualization. In addition, Infineon offers a reference design for a 150 W coolant pump. In addition to sample and demo software, the company offers a comprehensive package of commercial software products covering ASPICE-qualified motor control libraries for the automotive sector including FOC algorithms.
