Omron and Cisco are working together to advance IoT security in factories. As part of a collaboration, Cisco's network and security technologies are being integrated into Omron's programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The aim is to further improve both functional and data security in the course of the Internet of Things.

The aim of the collaboration is to enable secure processes in which programmable logic controllers as central automation components perform security authentication of people, devices and data with PLCs.

The integration of Cisco's network and security technology into Omron's controller technology, which combines control and information, is intended to ensure the secure implementation of IoT in production.

The authentications at a glance:

  • The PLC regulates user access and only allows authorized users secure remote access via VPN
  • The PLC detects connections to devices, blocks access from unauthorized devices and sends alarms in real time.
  • The communication data is encrypted by the PLC. The PLC also ensures that the information is transmitted in accordance with the relevant requirements. Unauthorized access and security threats are detected and logged.

Even before the technological partnership with Cisco, Omron had already launched the NJ series of machine controllers on the market. These controllers offer an OPC UA server as standard and enable secure data communication with software and devices that support OPC UA.
