Omron is working with Cisco to further improve IoT security in factories. The cooperation is intended to enable secure processes in which PLCs, as central automation components, perform security authentication of personnel, machines and exchanged data. By integrating Cisco's network and security technology into Omron's controller technology, which brings together control and information, the two companies want to help ensure that the IoT can be used securely in manufacturing and thus make an important contribution to the realization of the smart factory.

Before this technological partnership was agreed, Omron had developed the flagship of its PLCs, the NJ series of machine controllers. These controllers have an OPC UA server as standard and are compliant with this global standard for secure communication. The new PLCs enable secure data communication with software and devices that support OPC UA.

The authentications at a glance:

Person/user authentication:The PLCs authenticate user access and only allow authorized users secure remote access (VPN), which enables secure monitoring of PLCs and machines at production sites.

Device authentication:The PLCs detect connections to devices, block access from unauthorized devices and send alarms in real time.

Data authentication:The PLCs encrypt communication data and ensure that the information is transmitted in accordance with the respective requirements. They also detect and log unauthorized access and security threats through detailed monitoring and graphical representation of the data in the network.

As part of the cooperation, the range of available solutions for the authentication of persons and devices is to be expanded. as
