Best practice: high system availability at STIHL

Unplanned downtimes due to software errors in control systems are a thing of the past at STIHL: thanks to the versiondog data management system, the data jungle is kept in order. The current PLC program versions and important system documentation are stored centrally on an internal versiondog server. In the event of errors in production or control system failures, the data is immediately available and can be corrected or restored.

Thomas Ruppmann from the central electrical design department remembers how the search for the latest software version of a PLC became increasingly time-consuming when data backups on floppy disks or USB sticks were introduced. For him, one thing is certain: "With versiondog, we now have a tool with which we can access all the necessary information on the spot. This fast access reduces the downtimes of a system immensely."

Today, around 3,000 systems and around 7,600 components are stored and archived in versiondog in all German STHIL plants. The system has long since passed the everyday test: "A comparison of a SIMATIC Step 7 unit is very quick. Functionalities such as the version comparison are even significantly better than the solution of individual device manufacturers."
