Verlinde equips underwater film studio
Filmstudios Lites in Belgium has an underwater studio for filming underwater and on the surface. Chain hoists from Verlinde's Stagemaker series are used for the necessary lifting equipment.
Film Studios Lites needed lifting equipment for its five studios, including a unique water studio. This 24 by 21 meter studio with a nine meter high water tank can be completely submerged to simulate underwater environments. It holds a maximum of six million liters of water, five million in the tank and another million when the floor is flooded. The latter is mobile, can carry loads of up to 20 tons and can be submerged to different depths.
The maximum water surface area when the studio is flooded is 1,250 square meters. A unique and oversized water treatment and filter system creates various water effects (crystal clear, seawater, mist, rain). Waves up to one meter high can be created in the tank and also on the flooded floor. This special studio required specific lifting equipment for the set elements (such as boats), the lighting, the sound system, the cameras and the screens (bluescreens and black backgrounds).
Lifting solutions for an exceptional environment
Verlinde first carried out a technical study for this underwater studio, as the equipment had to be reliable and practical for users, while being able to withstand high temperatures (the water is heated to 30 degrees Celsius) and humidity. Joris Van de Wiele, Verlinde's project manager in Belgium, then proposed, in collaboration with a manufacturer belonging to the Europont network, two overhead travelling cranes weighing three tons each with a special black coating to blend in with the stage design, four attachment points for the mobile floor on the ceiling and four Eurobloc VT3 electric wire rope hoists with a total lifting capacity of 25 tons and a reach of 25 square meters.
They are equipped with directional and translational stroke variators. Their speed is variable from slow to very fast in order to adapt to the camera movements. These elements have been specially designed for integration into dynamic stage sets.
A total of 80 Stagemaker SR5 and SR10 chain hoists were used in all the film studios. These industrial electric chain hoists are ideal for applications in the entertainment industry with loads of 250 to 1,000 kilograms. According to the manufacturer, the Stagemaker SR with its ergonomic design is the only model on the market that is equipped with a double brake, folding handles and protective rubber buffers as standard. These chain hoists fit into all technical installations and offer the highest levels of safety and performance.
Verlinde supplied the entire hoist. The manufacturer of the Europont network is responsible for monitoring the overhead cranes as well as maintenance and troubleshooting. The order and delivery took place in 2018 and the studio was ready for operation at the beginning of 2019. as
