Three questions for...Eckhard Bluhm

40 years of Fachpack and coding and marking technology. Eckhard Bluhm, founder and Managing Director of Bluhm Systeme, a company that has been an exhibitor at Fachpack since the very first event, explains how the trade fair and the industry have developed since then and the role played by digitalization.

Fachpack is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Bluhm Systeme was one of the first exhibitors. How have the trade fair and packaging technology developed since then?
It all started with just a few exhibitors from the packaging technology sector. Back then, we were one of the 80 companies that "got the ball rolling"! Nobody could have guessed that Fachpack would develop into one of the most important and largest European trade fairs for packaging, processes and technology. In line with the development of the trade fair, Bluhm Systeme also presents itself in the market - the trade fair stand today makes this clear - it is 20 times as large as it was in 1979. The times of that time and the requirements of today are no longer comparable. Coding and marking technology used to be limited purely to marking. Today, exhibitors are showing more and more final projects and flexible labeling and packaging solutions. Visitors also come with concrete ideas of what they need.

What will we be seeing from Bluhm at Fachpack this year?
This year, our stand will focus on the key theme of "Environmentally friendly packaging". We have new and, above all, environmentally friendly system solutions in store. We have also come up with more than one highlight for all visitors to the stand: For example, a sustainability wall with labels made from natural resources. This shows how environmentally friendly labeling is made possible with special stone, grass or even sugar cane labels. In the BluhmTV area, we will take visitors into the interactive world of Bluhm Systeme. With the help of VR glasses, they will be teleported from the trade fair stand to various production halls, where they can watch the labeling systems at work for themselves.

Digitization does not stop at marking technology. What tasks and trends do you see here?
Digitalization and process automation are topics that coding and marking technology will continue to focus on. There are two important tasks here. Firstly, the networking of systems in order to create the best possible overall transparency. Machines have to think ahead themselves to a certain extent in order to be able to react correctly if something is not running optimally. The second task is to adjust the labeling systems to individual product labeling. Today, frequent product changes are becoming more and more important. As production line downtimes cost time and money, one of our main objectives is to significantly reduce these times. Our concepts for this are also being continuously expanded. For this reason, the customer will soon be able to automatically transfer all production data to all production machines at the touch of a button. These will then automatically adjust to the new product to be processed. This will eliminate the need for manual adjustment at the machine, which will significantly speed up production times. The implementation of these goals will open up completely new possibilities.
