Parcel opener decides

To cut or not to cut?

ALS has modified its Box Opening System (BOS). Thanks to upstream image processing, the system will in future recognize whether a container (e.g. a pallet cage) needs to be cut open or not.

The ALS cutting machines can solve almost any application in incoming goods, incoming returns, order picking and dispatch optimization thanks to their comprehensive capabilities. Depending on the system, the capacity is between 400 and 1,200 cartons per hour.

Depending on the parcel size, the BOS cutting system can open up to 600 items per hour or 14,000 units per day. According to the company, the standard system is able to open parcel sizes from 160 x 140 x 110 millimetres to 600 x 600 x 400 millimetres (other sizes possible) five times faster than manual handling without prior sorting.

BOS uses integrated sensors to automatically recognize the dimensions of the respective package and adjusts the cut accordingly. A sensor tracks the work process and detects when the cutting process is complete so that the next carton can be fed in via the standardized roller conveyor.

Thanks to upstream image processing, the new BOS will in future be able to recognize whether a pack (for example a mesh box) needs to be cut open or not. It independently decides whether to cut open a cardboard box during the ongoing process or, if necessary, feeds it past the cutter heads unprocessed as a container pack (also possible on a tray). The customer can therefore run all packs through the BOS system unsorted and chaotically on the conveyor system. as
