New distribution warehouse
The narrow-aisle forklifts are the centerpiece
Fashion logistics company Meyer & Meyer built a modern distribution warehouse for fashion and lifestyle products at its Peine site in just nine months. This was a challenge for the industrial truck specialist Hyster, whose narrow-aisle forklift trucks form the heart of the new logistics hall.
The Osnabrück-based family business Meyer & Meyer is an experienced fashion logistics specialist and supports its customers along the entire textile supply chain. From its headquarters in Osnabrück, the company manages logistics activities in Europe, Asia and North Africa with 1,800 employees. Meyer & Meyer has now expanded its capacities in Peine for a large digital company in the fashion industry with a new logistics hall with a floor space of 45,000 square meters.
The fashion logistics specialist invested more than 25 million euros in the new central warehouse, which supplies several logistics locations of a fashion mail order company and selected sales partners with goods. The new hall was built in the immediate vicinity of Meyer & Meyer's existing Pein logistics center. In addition to the existing logistics hall for hanging garments, which has been in operation for several years, the group of companies opened a 25,000 square meter hall for parcels and flat goods in June 2015.
Induction system keeps forklifts on track
At the heart of the new logistics hall are four powerful Hyster C1.3 narrow-aisle trucks (VNA). The C1.0-1.5 series narrow-aisle trucks are designed to lift loads up to 17 meters with their patented quadruple lift mast. The intelligent design of the swivel lift fork on the models in this series is one of the most compact and robust in the industry and ensures that the load is reliably stabilized. In addition, powerful and reliably encapsulated three-phase motors, the CANbus communication system and temperature control systems significantly minimize maintenance requirements.
If the swivel lift fork of the narrow-aisle truck is pushed out to the side, an integrated pantograph opens automatically so that the machine can also be used in the narrowest aisles. Meyer & Meyer uses a sophisticated induction system to ensure that the trucks stay on track. "There is an induction loop in the middle of each aisle that guides the forklift precisely," says Torsten Franke, Managing Director of Hyster dealer GS-Gabelstapler Service in Wolfenbüttel. "This makes it possible to leave just a few centimetres between the individual rows of shelves and make optimum use of the available space."
"Around 70 percent of the fashion items handled are temporarily stored with the help of the warehouse management system and then delivered to other logistics locations. Elevators automatically transport the items to the second floor of the warehouse, says warehouse manager Alexander Balko from Meyer & Meyer." The remaining items are handled directly and dispatched to sales partners. The fashion is delivered from all over the world by truck. From the ramp, Hyster pallet trucks and order pickers then take over the onward transportation to the high-bay warehouse, where the narrow-aisle forklifts are already waiting for the goods.
Industrial trucks in constant use
More than 50 Hyster industrial trucks are in constant use at Meyer & Meyer, "In addition to the planning, the biggest challenge for us was to have all industrial trucks ready for use in Peine within nine months, from the P1.6 electric low-platform truck to the K1.0L order picker and R1.6 reach truck to the C1.3 narrow-aisle trucks," says Franke. "Like gears that mesh together, the various industrial trucks have been specially selected for their use - for example the low lift order pickers." The machines, specially designed for time-critical picking tasks, are also suitable for the horizontal transportation of loads, such as cross-docking and shuttle operations.
Almost all industrial trucks used at Meyer & Meyer are equipped with lithium-ion batteries. This enables fast intermediate charging, for example during lunch breaks, and a long operating time under the toughest conditions. The trucks also have efficient energy management, which ensures low operating costs. as
