Dematic automates forwarding material flow
Dematic installs the Etow (Embedded towline systems) underfloor chain system in the new building in Mainaschaff for Kissel Spedition in Stockstadt. The foundation stone for the warehouse was laid at the end of November.
The underfloor chain drag conveyor will automate internal pallet transportation in the new building in future. The load carriers are transported on one of the 125 hand pallet trucks, which run over guide channels that are completely embedded in the floor.
The system consists of two circuits, each 180 meters long, with a circulating chain that can carry a maximum load of 35 tons. Each of them is also equipped with a weighing and volume scanner that checks all incoming pallets and records their master data. With the Dematic solution, the freight forwarder will increase its throughput rate in the warehouse to an average of 150 pallets per loop per hour. Commissioning is planned for December 2020.
"Etow from Dematic is the perfect automation solution for us, as it effortlessly transports our pallets, some of which weigh several tons, and ensures orderly, fast and transparent handling and therefore optimum material flow," says Thomas Kissel, Managing Director of the freight forwarding company. At the logistics service provider, the system will move loads of up to 35 tons.
Around 1,100 consignments leave the freight forwarder's warehouse every day, while around 950 arrive at the same time. Previously, the pallets in the warehouse were transported using forklift trucks. This not only took a lot of time, but also required a lot of manpower. "With the underfloor chain conveyor system, we expect a measurable increase in efficiency while at the same time reducing the susceptibility to errors across the entire intralogistics processes. The throughput rate will be around 300 pallets per hour with scalability to 500," says Kissel.
The system components also include a control cabinet for controlling the system and a control panel. Etow is simple and intuitive to use. All the user has to do is attach or detach the transport trolleys from the chain conveyor. The system is also low-maintenance thanks to its durable components. The permanent lubrication of the chain by the drive reduces maintenance to just a few interventions per year.
