Baggage handling from Beumer

No suitcase gets lost

Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport relies on a new baggage handling system from Beumer. It consists of the Crisbag container-based transport and sorting system and enables baggage to be tracked seamlessly between check-in and the satellite terminal.

The new Crisbag container conveyor system transports suitcases and bags from check-in in Terminal 2E through a 500-metre-long tunnel to Satellite Terminal 3 (S3), enabling one hundred percent baggage tracking. Beumer has designed the speed and performance of the system in such a way that it can even handle the baggage volume of a wide-bodied Airbus A380 aircraft. The system consists of more than 2,500 Crisbag modules and can handle around 3,200 suitcases and bags per hour.

"We have been working with Groupe ADP, the airport operator, for a long time," says Klaus Schäfer, Managing Director of the Danish Beumer Group company. "We have not only modernized the baggage handling system, but also integrated a screening system that meets ECAC Standard 3." This means that baggage arrives at its destination in less than 20 minutes - including screening.

Nadine Vennat, Project Director at Groupe ADP, explains: "During two months of intensive trials, the technical performance of the system was demonstrated with test baggage in terms of security - without interrupting operations in the terminal." During the four-week start-up phase, the teams from Beumer and Alstef provided operational support to the operator so that it could manage the system itself.

In order to validate the operational processes, the first step of the trial operation involved the so-called ORAT tests (Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer). The system was then gradually put into operation.

To manage all baggage handling processes, Beumer has combined the higher-level controllers with SAC and SCADA systems as well as with the lower-level controllers. The higher-level controllers also have a web-based user interface that allows employees to control the system remotely using a tablet, for example. RFID scanners for baggage tags are integrated, which have been proven to minimize the number of misrouted baggage items. Groupe ADP has been testing these together with devices from Air France and KLM since 2013.

In terms of passenger volume, Paris-Charles de Gaulle is one of the ten busiest airports in the world. The continuous availability of the new baggage handling system is therefore of crucial importance. To ensure long-term optimization and efficiency, the operator has a 24/7 maintenance contract with Beumer. Based on the high key performance indicators, this ensures that the baggage handling system maintains the agreed high level of performance. as
