Baggage handling on time for the World Cup

Beumer handed over the new baggage handling system at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport to the operator just in time for the World Cup in Russia in June 2018. The car runs through an almost two-kilometer-long tunnel that connects the northern and southern parts of the airport.

The Beumer Autover baggage handling system at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport runs through a two-kilometer tunnel located directly under the runways. The baggage reaches its destination at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour. There is also a tunnel for passengers.

In Moscow, the car system consists of an approximately 4.8-kilometer-long rail system and 187 so-called Autoca. Each of these vehicles holds one piece of luggage and thus enables one hundred percent baggage tracking. More than 900 pieces of baggage can be transported per hour. By choosing the Beumer system, Moscow Sheremetyevo will be able to reduce the baggage connection time between the terminals to a minimum. The contactless energy and data transmission also keeps the maintenance, operating and servicing costs of the car low. And because there are virtually no wearing parts and the rail system is virtually maintenance-free, there are hardly any follow-up costs.

Sheremetyevo is Russia's largest airport with more than 40 million passengers a year. The expansion of the new North Terminal will increase capacity to 59 million. The overall plan is to increase the number of passengers to 85 million per year by 2026. "We will create the best possible conditions for our partners," says Andrey Nikulin, Deputy General Director of the airport. This also includes Aeroflot, Russia's largest airline. "We want to become one of the largest aviation hubs in the world," explains Nikulin. "For the World Cup, we can welcome guests and participants at the highest level."

The project posed a number of challenges for Beumer, but the system provider was able to overcome them. "On the one hand, we had to install our Beumer Autover under the existing runways and, on the other, ensure smooth operations for the World Cup," says Klaus Schäfer, Managing Director of the Danish Beumer Group company in Aarhus. "We were able to successfully complete the planned handover." as
