Digital transformation in the ex sector

Remote support in the industry

Challenges such as the current pandemic, personnel costs and the shortage of skilled workers are putting companies under increasing pressure.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain extensive systems efficiently and in line with requirements and to rectify problems promptly. Mobile end devices, such as the explosion-proof tablets and smartphones from the Pepperl+Fuchs brandEcom Instruments, open up the effective possibility of calling up digital construction plans or checklists of the necessary work steps anywhere or taking an expert virtually with you on site. This gives companies the security of being able to rectify increasingly complex processes and problems effectively and qualitatively on site, thereby significantly reducing the number of breakdowns thanks to predictive maintenance.

A major advantage of using mobile devices in industry is the possibility of remote support for technicians when carrying out complex inspection processes. For this purpose, video calls or augmented reality (AR) applications can also be used in hazardous areas via smartphones or tablets. Technicians on site can contact experts or even the manufacturer of the asset if necessary and ask for their support with complex issues. This saves time and resources.

In order to take remote support to a new level, Ecom has been working intensively with a partner for some time on the development of further products that can be used in combination with smartphones. For optimum hands-free operation, including via voice control or touchpad by the employee on site, and an optimum view of the processes by the remote expert, smart glasses are a particular focus of development. Ecom plans to launch the smart glasses on the market this fall.
