Smart Iglidur
The plain bearing plans its maintenance
Igus has developed the first intelligent bearing to detect the wear of plain bearings in good time. It warns of impending failure in good time. This allows machine and system operators to plan maintenance, repair and replacement in advance.
If the construction machine breaks down, the packaging plant stops or the wind turbine no longer turns due to a bearing failure, the annoyance of machine and plant operators is pre-programmed. This is why Igus has now added the world's first intelligent plain bearing to its smart plastics range.
This detects wear in extremely stressed applications in advance and gives the user a signal in good time if the bearing is at risk of failure. This means that maintenance can be planned and does not take agricultural machinery operators by surprise during the harvest season, for example. "We have developed smart Iglidur especially for bearing points that are difficult to access and applications where regular maintenance intervals are not planned," explains Stefan Loockmann-Rittich, head of the Iglidur plain bearing technology division at Igus.
Smart plain bearing individually designed
The base body of the new plain bearing consists of two components: The internal customized lubricant-free Iglidur material and an outer hard polymer shell that protects the bearing. "The customer is free to choose the material that is best suited to their application. The complete range of Iglidur materials is available to them," says Loockmann-Rittich.
An intelligent sensor is used between the two components to measure wear. The data measured by the sensor can be integrated in various ways by the machine and system operators. For example, an indicator lamp can be used to provide information about the wear of the plain bearing, and an automatic switch-off function is another possible integration concept. For high-end applications, the data can be sent directly to a controller, which forwards and evaluates it via the Icom communication module to a customized web interface for maintenance. The user can then plan maintenance and replacement via the end device of their choice. as
