What does the future hold for mechanical engineering? What changes will come with the implementation of Industry 4.0 projects? What requirements will be placed on equipment manufacturing in the future? Item recently became a member of the Center Connected Industry (CCI) on the RWTH Aachen Campus in order to answer these and other questions about the future and offer suitable solutions. Scientists from various research areas are working there together with industrial consortia on various tasks relating to digitalization in production and logistics.

With innovation laboratories and a demonstration factory, the CCI offers the ideal infrastructure for evaluating new technology solutions. Ideas and concepts are turned into prototypes that are tested under real conditions. "As an innovative company, item wants to continue to develop and deal with new technologies at an early stage," says Jens-Uwe Gustmann, responsible for product management and business model development at item. "The cooperation with the CCI gives us the opportunity to work in a network of industry and research and to redesign processes in productive manufacturing and intralogistics."

The topics range from the networking of workstations and digital tools to driverless transport vehicles. In the field of machine automation, Item has already established smart products such as linear units with intelligent control systems and software on the market. The task now is to further develop the existing products and add smart components. "In future, we want to position ourselves more strongly in the segment of data-driven production logistics (future logistics) and assembly and production control (future assembly) in conjunction with optimized networking through 5G," says Jens-Uwe Gustmann. "In the CCI, we have found an ideal partner to shape the future of production and logistics together." as
