Igus takes to the air

Plain bearings for airplanes

Five Iglidur high-performance polymers now officially meet the fire protection requirements of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for aircraft interiors. Areas of application for plain bearings made from these materials include bearing points in seats, tables and doors.

Lightweight, quiet and fail-safe - these are some of the most important criteria for components in aviation. Components for aircraft interiors must also comply with strict fire protection standards. The plain bearing materials IglidurG V0, IglidurX, IglidurA350, IglidurH and IglidurJ350 from Igus have now been positively tested by an independent testing institute in accordance with the fire test FAR CS 25.853 App F, Part 1a 1(ii). The five plain bearing materials are also classified as V0 according to UL94 and are therefore the ideal solution for moving applications on board aircraft, for example in fold-out tables, adjustable seats or in hinges of doors and luggage compartments.

These five materials provide aircraft interior designers with suitable Iglidur materials for all plain bearing applications: The cost-effective all-rounder Iglidur G V0, the FDA-compliant Iglidur A350, the endurance runner IglidurJ350 and IglidurH with particularly low moisture absorption through to IglidurX, the pressure-resistant high-temperature specialist.

The Iglidur plain bearings do not require any external lubrication. Instead, solid lubricants embedded homogeneously in the material ensure low-noise and smooth-running actuation. This offers users several advantages, announced Igus: Firstly, they save on time-consuming maintenance work and costs due to regular relubrication; secondly, there is no need for additional work during assembly; and thirdly, the components always remain clean, which is an important criterion, especially in aircraft interiors.

Every gram counts in the air

Compared to metallic alternatives, Iglidur plain bearings s are up to seven times lighter, which is particularly important in the aviation industry, where every kilogram saved pays off directly in terms of range and efficiency. Last but not least, they are cheaper than metal bearings and are also corrosion-free. In contrast to metal bearings, they are more flexible, which not only simplifies installation and helps to minimize noise, but also makes the bearings less sensitive to impacts and edge loads. This is a major advantage, especially in applications such as folding tables on aircraft seats.

The high-performance plastics therefore offer triple savings: in weight, in maintenance and in price. In addition, users will find numerous materials in the range of more than 50 materials that meet a wide variety of legal and industry-specific regulations. Whether FDA and EU-compliant for the food industry, for contact with drinking water, the tobacco industry or general and industry-specific fire protection standards such as for aircraft or railroad technology. Users will always find the right bearing. as
