Hexapod

Folded six-legged stool

Parallel kinematic hexapods position in six degrees of freedom and work more precisely than is possible with serial, stacked systems. However, installation space is usually limited in automation systems. In addition, multi-shift operation requires durable solutions.

At the same time, the risk of collision is often increased due to the narrowness, for example when re-referencing after an emergency stop or power failure and therefore uncontrolled approach is required. With the Hexapod H-825, Physik Instrumente (PI) now has the right positioning solution for such applications in its range. The parallel kinematic positioning system works with brushless DC motors; they are suitable for high speeds, can be precisely controlled and ensure high precision. By dispensing with sliding contacts, they are smooth-running, low-wear and achieve a long service life. A

bsolut encoders, which provide clear position information even when de-energized, make reference runs superfluous, which improves efficiency and safety during operation. The drives have been "folded" for a compact design. As a result, the Hexapod is only 195 millimetres high with a diameter of 320 millimetres and can position loads of up to 30 kilograms precisely, quickly and with long operating times. Typical areas of application include micro-assembly, biotechnology, semiconductor production and the alignment of optical systems. As the cables are suitable for drag chains, the Hexapod can also be moved along in the system. pb
