100 years of August Steinmeyer
Focus on ball screws
The production of ball screws requires extensive know-how and many years of experience. August Steinmeyer has specialized in the development and production of complex drive components and offers them individually tailored to a wide range of industries and applications: From tool and special machine construction to medical technology and aerospace. The company is 100 years old this year.
August Steinmeyer founds the Feinmechanische Werkstätten in Albstadt in 1920. Just one year later, the first micrometers and micrometers are manufactured there, which are also exported abroad. In 1937, 17 employees moved into a new building with a residential building in Riedstraße. After the death of August Steinmeyer in 1940, Erwin Beck joins the company as co-owner and ten years later becomes the sole owner of the now successful medium-sized business. In 1965, the production of ball screws begins in Albstadt, which are first used in microscopy technology - even then, the manufacturing technology is so sophisticated that the miniature ball screws can still be used in the same way today. The quality of the workpieces has continuously improved thanks to new materials, optimized manufacturing processes and quality controls. The quantities produced today are also significantly higher than 60 years ago.
In 1980, ball screw drives become the company's main product and soon outsell measuring devices. In 1987, Erwin Beck's sons, Joachim and Alexander Beck, take over the management of the company. Five years later, the Steinmeyer group of companies is founded. It consists of August Steinmeyer GmbH in Albstadt, Steinmeyer Mechatronik GmbH in Dresden and Feinmess Suhl GmbH in Suhl.
Due to continuous growth, the production area at August Steinmeyer is expanded by a total of 6,500 square meters by 2012. In 2017, after almost 40 years, the Beck brothers hand over the management of the company to Dr. Manfred Münch, who holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering, as the first external manager in the company. His ambitious goal: to reduce the production throughput of standardized ball screws to just four weeks. Thanks to a new segmentation of the company, flowing production, modern machines and adapted internal structures, process chains can be streamlined and delivery times shortened. Today, Steinmeyer offers a wide range of ball screws with diameters between three and 160 millimetres: From miniature to heavy-duty ball screws. pb
