JiVS Release 5.0: Smartphone-driven ease of use

Since the triumph of smartphones, users' expectations in terms of ease of use have changed fundamentally. Since then, specialist applications must have the same modern design and be just as easy and intuitive to use as apps for end users - even if the number of users is limited. This type of user-friendly ease of use is one of the key innovations of the latest release 5.0 of JiVS, the platform for system-independent data management and compliance as well as the deactivation of legacy applications.

In addition to the process-oriented display of data, the creation of additional views of the database is one of the productivity-oriented improvements in JiVS.

According to Data Migration Services AG , JiVS has the advantage of retaining data from decommissioned legacy systems in their business context. This gives specialist users the opportunity to trace the creation of data and its further processing along the value chain. This process-oriented view of data from decommissioned systems is relevant in the project business and plant engineering, for example, where long runtimes often prevail. When modernizing a power plant, for example, it is extremely important to know exactly which parts or materials were originally installed in order to avoid errors and delays in planning and, above all, execution. The various views in the new JiVS interface can be displayed side by side so that, for example, a specialist user can track the material flow from ordering to delivery and assembly at a glance.

"Ease of use has become a real productivity issue," emphasizes Tobias Eberle, CEO of Swiss company Data Migration Services AG. "Anyone who thinks about both aspects together in a business context and incorporates them into software creates additional benefits. After all, ease of use is not an end in itself, but ultimately serves to speed up and improve the quality of work. That is why we have used the fundamental revision of the user interface in version 5.0 of our platform to make business-relevant improvements to productivity."

In addition to the process-oriented display of data, the creation of additional views of the database is one of the productivity-oriented improvements in JiVS. While reprogramming was previously necessary in many cases, the new functionality called "Custom SQL" allows new views to be created by configuration, for example by transferring existing SQL statements in the legacy applications directly into JiVS and applying them. New SQL statements can also be generated directly in JiVS without the need to develop program code.

Security and data protection

In addition to numerous security optimizations, JiVS 5.0 is characterized by further improvements in terms of data protection. For example, data can now be hidden specifically and on the basis of rules at field level so that unauthorized persons cannot view it. This is not only important for revisions or audits by internal or external auditors, but also in the context of the new European General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR), which sets the highest standards for the protection of personal data.

In addition to preventing unauthorized access, the EU GDPR also provides for the deletion of data. This is exactly what JiVS Retention Management allows as an extension of JiVS History, which can be used to remove information at the level of individual data records. In the JiVS version planned for summer, it will be possible to preconfigure and automate the deletion processes.

Another planned innovation in one of the upcoming product releases is a mobile version of the JiVS user interface. Legacy data such as material lists or construction drawings play a crucial role in service and maintenance processes in particular. However, some of this data is many years old, meaning that it is no longer economically viable to continue operating the original systems. With the future JiVS mobile solution, however, they can be displayed securely and cost-effectively on site. In this way, even old data will become part of current business processes - for greater productivity and quality. cs
